Jury awards family $1.38 million in wrongful death case

by Administrator 8. February 2011 03:05

An Arizona jury has awarded a family nearly $1.38 million in a wrongful death lawsuit after a patient suffered complications from a bariatric surgery.

The husband of the patient was awarded this settlement although the jury found that the jury was just as responsible for the complications as the surgeon was. The 55-year-old female patient had previously undergone surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and a hiatus hernia when she sought out a surgeon for gastric banding.

The surgery was performed at the Arizona Bariatric Center and Surgical Specialty Center in Arizona and after the surgery the woman said that she had trouble breathing and had a fever, but she was discharged to her home which was nearly 100 miles from the center. Three days later, the woman collapsed and died of post- operation sepsis. The doctor was found negligent for not seeing the post-op signs, but the woman was also held responsible for not seeking emergency medial care.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim.

Study suggests that private planes add airbags

by Administrator 1. February 2011 04:25

A new study recommends that airbags be placed inside of private planes. The Federal Air Safety investigators have issued thier first 'nonbinding recommendation' that airbags be installed into the privately owned planes.

The National Transportation Safety Board's study has shown that the benefits that are associated with having airbags will significantly help reduce injuries and fatalities in plane crashes. The study assessed the performance of airbags in roughly two dozen different accidents over a three year span.

The board wants to make this rule a voluntary compliance because the Federal Aviation Administration is the only group that has the power to make safety improvements. General aviation accidents take about 500 lives each year across the U.S.
