Area Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run Fatality

A Phoenix-area man has been taken into police custody on suspicion of commiting vehicular homicide and fleeing from the scene.  The 27-year-old man is suspected of having hit and killed a wheelchair-bound man on September 19, while the man was attempting to cross Phoenix Street.  The driver fled the scene immediately, but police found the vehicle in question parked outside the house of the suspect's mother, where they made the arrest.

A grand jury has indicted the man on charges of manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and aggravated DUI.

Arasco Mine Employee Killed in Accident

A mine employee of Arasco has died as a result of a workplace accident at the Ray Mine outside of Kearny, Arizona.  The 29-year-old man was driving a haul truck when it struck a safety berm, which caused the truck to tip over, killing the man.  The employee of 2 1/2 years was pronounced dead at the scene.  The company believes the incident is a workplace accident, and is complying with investigators.  While the mine remains open, the assistant mine inspector has said that the site of the accident has been closed off to aid the investigation.  Investigation is also being conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Two Phoenix-Area Construction Workers Shocked

Two construction workers in Phoenix were injured on Wednesday, September 23, when a construction crane swung into live powerlines, leaving them with third-degree burns. According to fire officials, the accident occurred when the crane operator, who was talking to the two construction workers through headsets, accidentally swung the crane into nearby powerlines, shocking the men in headsets. The workers received third-degree burns to the ears, head, chest, and legs, and were rushed to the hospital. The crane operator is in critical condition.

Passenger in Vehicle Injured

A passenger in a vehicle was critically injured following a recent accident in which a 19 year-old driver was possibly intoxicated and operating the vehicle.

According to reports, the individual was driving and lost control of the vehicle.  The vehicle struck a guard rail and  then came to a stop. Authorities arrived on the scene to investigate the accident.  The passenger was rushed to the hospital because of his  injuries.  The driver was arrested at the scene of the accident after authorities determined that the individual was likely intoxicated. The accident is still under investigation.

Woman driving SUV hits stroller, kills baby

A woman driving near Westwind Preparatory Academy did not see a mother pushing a stroller and hit the stoller. The child in the stroller was killed in the accident, and the mother was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

According to police reports, the woman driving the sports utility vehicle was not charged for the accident. A student at the school told police that the SUV was pulling out of the school's entrance when she hit the baby.

Man Injured in Hit and Run

On Monday morning, a hit and run involving a pedestrian occurred. Around 6:30am, the pedestrian was walking at the intersection of 72nd Pl and West McDowell Rd when a vehicle struck him.

The man, in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. As of Monday evening, police were still looking for the driver responsible for the accident.

Light Rail Derailed

On Saturday, a crash occurred involving an SUV and the light rail. The train and the SUV collided at the intersection of 32nd St and Washington, causing the train to be derailed.

Four injuries were reported in the crash. According to a Phoenix fire captain, this is the worst crash since the light rail began operating in December because of the injuries and damage caused.
