Woman Hit Crawling Across Freeway

by Administrator 27. February 2009 04:21

An accident in Arizona on the East Valley Freeway has left a woman dead after being hit by possibly multiple cars. The accident occurred early Friday morning.

For unknown reasons,  a woman was crawling across the freeway. Officials had received a phone call from someone reporting that the woman was on the freeway before the accident happened.  Officials estimate that the woman may be in her 30's and was possibly injured at the time of the accident.   The woman was struck when other cars wrecked into each other,  causing a chain reaction of some cars being pushed forward and others cars swerving to avoid the accident.

The Interstate was closed this morning as the investigation into the incident took place.

Study Will Test Stem Cells for Treatment of Spinal Injuries

by Administrator 19. February 2009 03:35

There may be new hope for patients with severe spinal cord injuries.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a study to test embryonic stem cells as a possible treatment for spinal injuries.  The use of such embryonic stem cells, derived from adults and fetuses, has been controversial and the subject of much debate around the world.

The new study will be conducted by California-based biotechnology firm Geron.  The company plans to test the treatment on eight to ten patients across the country.  According to company officials, the goal is to see restored movement or sensation in the patients.  More broadly, the study will test the overall safety of such stem cell treatments.

The study comes as President Obama is preparing to reverse Bush administration policy on federal funding for stem cell research.  Geron officials said that the study was the first step in a long testing and analysis process, but that the potential benefits for patients are many.  Patient advocacy groups called the study's approval a milestone in stem cell treatment research.

If someone you know has suffered a spinal injury as a result of another party’s reckless or careless behavior, it is important to have qualified legal representation.   Please contact the Phoenix personal injury attorneys of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.L.C. by phone at 877-366-5557 for more information.

Two Arizona Highway Stretches on List of Deadliest Roads

by Administrator 16. February 2009 07:28

Two stretches of highway in Arizona are among the top 10 deadliest roads in the country, according to an analysis of crash data released by Fox News.  There were nearly 300 automobile-related deaths on the highways over the past 5 years.

The stretches of road in question are the I-10 in Maricopa County and the I-10 in Pinal County.  Officials say the I-10 in Maricopa County is dangerously narrow for the amount of traffic it carries.  The state is now asking for additional funds to expand the highway.

The I-10 in Pinal County has a different problem, according to area firefighters.  That stretch of highway is so straight, drivers often fall asleep while behind the wheel.  Because it is located halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, it is a common travel route and drivers are often fatigued at that point of the trip.

Unfortunately, such car accidents are all too common across the state.  If you or someone you know has been involved in an automobile accident, please contact the Phoenix personal injury attorneys of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.L.C. by phone at  877-366-5557.

House of Representatives Passes Elder Abuse Law

by Administrator 16. February 2009 04:02

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to protect against elderly abuse for the first time in 17 years.  The Elder Abuse Victims Act (HR 448) provides increased funding for elder abuse enforcement at the local, state and federal levels.  In addition, the bill would require the Attorney General to conduct an abuse prevention study.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), easily passed in the House by a vote of 397-25.  According to Sestak, between 1 and 2 million seniors have abused in the United States alone.

Rep. Sestak is a leading congressional voice on elderly rights and protection of the elderly.  He previously sponsored a bill known as the Elder Justice Act.  Rep. Sestak is known to visit retirement homes and senior citizen centers on a regular basis.  He is an advocate for greater law enforcement training to help combat abuse against the elderly.

If a loved one has been the victim of elderly abuse, please contact the Phoenix elder abuse attorneys of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.L.C. by phone at  877-366-5557.
